Kanmusu and Human Navies
Jireigo
Our protagonist, a human from our Earth that became the personification of Submarine I-205.- Gender Bender: Was originally a guy in real life.
- Self-Insert
Aoba
- Can't Catch Up: Due to how 'old' she is, relatively speaking, her equipment has fallen too far behind the curve for her to be useful in battle. She really isn't happy with this.
- I Just Want to Be Badass: While she is this already by virtue of what she is, she really wants to be better, as she's reached the point where her equipment is no longer effective in the field.
- Papparazzi: Has a reputation as this, and it isn't entirely unjustified.
The Abyssals
The signature enemy of the kanmusu and humanity as a whole.
As A Whole:
- Always Chaotic Evil: Pretty much - the 'nicest' abyssals just want to be left alone, but they will use deadly force to make sure that things stay that way.
- The Corruption: The Abyss itself seems to have this effect on shipgirls, as do some of the abyssals.
- Evil Counterpart: To the shipgirls - in particular, some are actually shipgrils themselves, and have been 'redeemed' by sinking them.
- Hidden Agenda Villain: Downplayed - while the overall goal of the abyssals is the extinction of the human race, several of them are also shown to have their own goals.
- Human Resources: Abyssals see human as 'organic resources', which they have no trouble using as food for their own.
- Kill All Humans: The goal of most abyssals - some really couldn't caree less, but the majority won't stop fighting until mankind is extinct.
- Names to Run Away from Really Fast: The Abyssal Research and Development Group is referred to as Section 731, who, in real life, were a Japanese Army Unit famous for A. conducting illegal experiemnts on prisoners of war and Chinese civilians and B. getting away with said actions due to being drafted into U.S. Bioweaponry Research.
Siren Of The Depths/ Hatori Iroha
An Abyssals Submarine Princess- Big Bad: For the moment at least.
- The Corrupter: Tries to convince Jireigo to side with the Abyssals. She fails.
- Evil Counterpart: Shaping up to be this to Jireigo. Certain lines have suggested that she is actually Jireigo's Enemy Without, though.
- Monster Progenitor: Is a member, and prior to Section five of the story, head of the Soulforge, which is used to summon new abyssals.
- Villainous Friendship: has one with the section chief.
- Was Once a Man: Chapter 8.5 indicates she was actually the human Hatori Iroha, a Shrine Maiden and the first person to achieve successful, deliberate summoning of Kanmusu. At some point early in the war, the base she was at was attacked and destroyed, with no trace of her, her team, or the personnel at the base being found. How she was converted into an abyssal is still ambiguous.
Section Head
Head of the Abyssal R&D division.- Evil Counterpart: Is Akashi's.
- Mad Scientist: Would the abyssals have anything else.
- Playing with Syringes: What did you expect.
- Villainous Friendship: Has one with Siren. It's mostly motivated by the fact the Siren actually happens to be smart about how she uses her subordinates, most of whom are considered Cannon Fodder by other abyssals.
