In a universe made entirely out of LEGO bricks, an old wizard named Vitruvius (voice of Creator/MorganFreeman) attempts to protect an ancient and powerful relic called the "Kragle" (actually a tube of Krazy Glue) from the evil Lord Business (voice of Creator/WillFerrell). He fails, and Lord Business makes him blind. However, he warns Lord Business of a prophecy about "[[TheChosenOne The Special]]" who will find the "Piece of Resistance" capable of stopping the Kragle. Lord Business claims Vitruvius made up the prophecy and kicks Vitruvius off a cliff.
Eight and a half years later, an ordinary, optimistic construction worker named Emmet Brickowski (voice of Creator/ChrisPratt) lives in the city named Bricksburg. He's rather unimaginative, and goes through his daily life following an instruction manuel. He watches the popular sitcom ''Where Are My Pants?'', buys overpriced coffee, and enjoys the hit song "Everything is Awesome" just because he's told to.
After a day of work, Emmet notices a woman searching around his construction site for something. When he tries to follow her after she flees, he falls down a hole and finds the Piece of Resistance, a red brick. Compelled to touch it, he experiences visions, including one of a giant called "the Man Upstairs", and passes out.
Emmet wakes up in the custody of Bad Cop (voice of Creator/LiamNeeson), Lord Business' lieutenant. Bad Cop has another persona on the back of his head called Good Cop (also voice of Creator/LiamNeeson, but in a higher tone). Emmet realizes the Piece of Resistance is stuck to his back. Bad Cop tells Emmet that Business plans to use the Kragle to end the world in three days, and shows Emmet a video of all his co-workers calling him a forgettable, unspecial blank slate of a person, which makes Emmet sad. Bad Cop assumes it's just a cover, and has him taken to the Melting Chamber.
The woman from earlier, who calls herself Wyldstyle (voice of Creator/ElizabethBanks) rescues Emmet, believing him to be the Special. They escape Bricksburg and travel to the Wild West, though Wyldstyle quickly realizes that Emmet is not the Special. Not knowing what else to do with him, she takes him to Vitruvius. Wyldstyle explains how she, Vitruvius and many other figures are among the Master Builders who can instinctively build anything without instruction manuals and oppose Business's attempts to suppress their creativity.
Meanwhile at the Octan Tower, Lord Business has a meeting with Bad Cop in his skyscraper's relic room full of non-LEGO items. He tests his lieutenant's true loyalties by having him fire the Kragle weapon onto his own parents, Ma Cop and Pa Cop. When the Good Cop side wins over, Business takes a q-tip and nail polish to rub the Good Cop side off. Bad Cop apologizes to his parents upon using the Kragle weapon to glue them in place.
Upon finding Vitruvius, both he and Wyldstyle are disappointed to find Emmet displays no outside creativity, though they are convinced of his potential when he recalls visions of the Man Upstairs. Bad Cop arrives and a chase ensues, during which Emmet displays his first act of creativity by attaching a wheel to his head to help their carriage turn. They are about to die from falling off a bridge when they are saved by Wyldstyle's boyfriend, ComicBook/{{Batman}} (voice of Creator/WillArnett).
They travel through Middle Zealand to get to {{Cloudcuckooland}}. They meet Unikitty (voice of Creator/AlisonBrie), who takes them to where all the Master Builders are. Among them includes Myth/RobinHood, ComicBook/{{Superman}} (voice of Creator/ChanningTatum), ComicBook/GreenLantern (voice of Creator/JonahHill), [[Franchise/HarryPotter Dumbledore]], [[Literature/TheLordOfTheRings Gandalf]], Creator/{{Michelangelo|Buonarroti}}, [[Franchise/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles Michaelangelo]], [[WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons Milhouse]], UsefulNotes/{{Cleopatra|VII}}, Creator/ShaquilleONeal, and UsefulNotes/AbrahamLincoln. Emmet starts giving a RousingSpeech, but is interrupted by Metal Beard (voice of Creator/NickOfferman), a pirate who lost every part of his body besides his head in the Master Builders' last attempt at storming the Octan Tower. Emmet admits he's not a Master Builder yet, which causes all the other Master Builders to boo and lose faith in him, and Metal Beard leaves on his ship.
Bad Cop and his forces arrive, having placed a tracker on Emmet. Emmet, Wyldstyle, Batman, Unikitty, Vitruvius and Benny (voice of Creator/CharlieDay), an astronaut obsessed with spaceships, all escape in a submarine while all the other Master Builders get captured and taken to the Think Tank, where they are used to create the instructions for everything. Emmet comforts Unikitty as she cries about her home being destroyed, and shows the double decker couch he built. Their submarine is blown up, and when no survivors are detected, Bad Cop and his forces leave.
Emmet and the others survived by hiding in the double-decker couch, and get rescued by Metal Beard. Emmet realizes that the last thing Business expects Master Builders to do is to follow the instructions, and devises a heist plan to break into Octan Tower. Benny and Metal Beard sneak into the control room to disable the security.
Inside Octan Tower, Wyldstyle admits to Emmet that she wanted to be the Special, and reveals her real name to be Lucy. They get spotted and taken to the Think Tank, where President Business decapitates Vitruvius with a penny. Vitruvius admits to Emett that he made the prophecy up, and is about to say something important before he dies. Business throws the Piece of Resistance out into an abyss, and straps Emett to a self-destruct device to blow up all the Master Builders. He betrays Bad Cop, leaving him to die in the soon-to-explode Think Tank, then begins to use the Kragle to glue the residents of Bricksburg.
Vitruvius returns as a ghost to tell Emett that all he has to do to be The Special is believe that he is. Emett throws himself out of the building into the abyss, disarming the bomb and saving the Master Builders. Lucy breaks into the studio where ''Where Are My Pants?'' is filmed to send out a message to all the other Lego people to build their own creative weapons to defend themselves. Bad Cop draws a new Good Cop face on the back of his head and holds off Business' robot army. Benny builds a spaceship to get the group out of the Octan Tower. With their newfound imaginations, the citizens gradually gain the upper hand much to the Master Builders' astonishment and delight.

Finn's father, "The Man Upstairs" (played by Creator/WillFerrell in person) chastises his son for creating hodgepodges of different playsets and begins to glue his perceived "perfect" creations together permanently. In the LEGO world, this causes Lord Business' forces to gain the upper hand. Realizing the father will glue all the LEGO bricks in place, Emmet forces himself to move and fall off the table, gaining Finn's attention. Finn returns Emmet and the Piece of Resistance to the Lego set.
Emmet has his Master-Building imagination unlocked and builds a massive mech out of the construction vehicles to assist his friends before confronting Lord Business. In the human world, Finn's father looks at his son's creations and finds himself impressed. Realizing he is suppressing his son's creativity and his son based President Business on him, the father has a change of heart and allows his son to play with his LEGO bricks however he sees fit. In the Lego world, Emett tells Business that he is just as much The Spcial as anyone else, and Business has a change of heart. He puts the Piece of Resistence on the Kragle, and it explodes.
Business unglues his victims with mineral spirits. After the world is restored, Lucy and Emmet enter a relationship with Batman's blessing. Finn's father says that Finn's younger sister will also be allowed access to the Lego set, which causes the Lego world to be invaded by Duplo Lego aliens, announcing their intentions to destroy them. Emett says "Oh man."
